Shleppers Moving & Storage, Yonkers NY

BIG MOVER HORROR STORY Want to increase the stress of moving within or out of Manhattan? Hire Schleppers, or any like white-gloved, large, corporate moving company. ME: I am a Design Professional in early 50’s, who after 10 years in 5th Floor Chelsea walkup studio decided to to move to transitionary situation in Riverdale (Bronx), and store greater part of my belongings in a storage facility Yonkers, just 15 miles from Chelsea. AGREED FEE: $579. Rep said I would be charged more for unlisted items*. He took my debit card number for $100 deposit and stated full sum of move would be deducted automatically when done. They deducted, but have reimbursed, $200 gratuity tip that I did not authorize. MOVING DAY Sunday 5.30.16 Memorial Day Weekend Temp: 89 F • SCHLEPPER CREW WAS NOT CORDIAL and were put off when I asked their names. • SCHLEPPER CREW ACTED HORRIFIED I was in walkup building. Rep did not ask this about building during initial phone discussion but could have easily found out by its address. • SCHLEPPER CREW LEFT 30% OF ITEMS PACKED, as they were unitemized on their 'official' sheet. Contrary to rep. claim they took Nothing additional -- most notably: Chairs for table (that they did move), Collapsible desk (packed/ ready to move), light, thin shelves, ez lamps, etc. • SCHLEPPER CREW LIED TO ME When asked why they were leaving items I had packed for them, they said that all was by square footage, and there was no room left on the truck. The truck was practically bigger than my studio! I gasped when they pulled away with half of the truck empty. They unloaded the truck at storage in less than an hour. • SCHLEPPER OFFICE STAFF HUNG UP THE PHONE when I called to complain about the abysmal service. The crew didn’t give a damn how remaining packed items would be moved, and neither did Schlepper office personnel! AFTERMATH (the short of it) • Had to pay more $$$ to help move items left unexpectedly by Schleppers. • Had to make repeated trips by car myself to move items to storage, in mid-week Manhattan traffic and sweltering NYC heat. • Exhausted and traumatized on day I had to vacate studio apt, I left valuable items in it. • Feeling of inordinate unsettlement from move, as of 6.21.16, is ongoing. *Major items listed: queen size bed, sleeper couch, small table and 30 boxes of books.
