I want to warn others about my disastrous experience with AB Movers, a company that misled me, overcharged me, and ultimately caused unnecessary stress and financial loss.

Bait-and-Switch Tactics & False Promises

Initially, I thought I was working with Budget Van Lines, but the call was actually from AB Movers. They were very polite at first, and I made it clear that I needed my belongings moved from St. Louis to San Francisco by December 20 or 21. The only reason I chose them was because they assured me they could meet this deadline, weather permitting.

I booked the move three weeks in advance, and the initial quote was $1,800 for 12 medium boxes, a dresser, a bed frame, a box spring, and a mattress. Later, the price was adjusted to $2,300 after I added more boxes—which I understood and accepted as fair.

However, after taking my $683 deposit, they called the day before pickup demanding an additional $1,300. After they received this payment, they suddenly changed their story: the dispatcher would call me the next day to confirm, and the move-in date was no longer guaranteed.

Breach of Contract: Delivery Timeline Deception

When the driver finally called, he stated there was no way they could deliver on the agreed-upon date and that it would take three weeks—not the few days they originally promised. This was a complete bait-and-switch, and when I called to cancel, they refused to refund my money, meaning I would have lost nearly $2,000 with no way to recover it.

I had already paid $450 for a San Francisco moving permit, which you must have, and had a flight booked the next day. I was now trapped in a situation where canceling meant losing all my money and having to find another mover at the last minute.

Last-Minute Price Gouging & Extortion

AB Movers also misled me about packaging. They explicitly told me I could use medium boxes and vinyl shipping bags. However, when the driver arrived, he suddenly claimed they couldn’t move the vinyl bags and demanded an additional $609 to repack everything.

When I refused to pay, he threatened to leave, leaving me stranded and forcing me to start over with a new moving company on short notice. This is extortion. I had no choice but to pay, or I would have lost all the money I had already paid them.

Additionally, I paid for two movers, but only one showed up, and then they charged me for extra “steps” despite not fulfilling their contract.

Delivery Disaster & More Hidden Fees

Because they did not deliver on time, I spent Christmas sleeping on the floor instead of unpacking and settling into my home. My entire vacation was ruined, and I had to cancel any plans for company.

When they finally arrived on New Year’s Eve, only one driver showed up (again), and he claimed he couldn’t find parking—despite the $450 moving permit I already paid for. He then tried to charge me additional carrying fees because he didn’t want to park legally. They also refused to provide me with an exact delivery date four days in advance, so I couldn’t even get another permit.

Shady Payment Practices & No Accountability

Once my items arrived, they demanded payment only in cash, Cash App, or Zelle— no credit cards allowed. This is a huge red flag because it prevents customers from disputing charges if anything goes wrong.

They refused to unload anything until I paid in full, meaning I had no chance to inspect my belongings before paying. Once they had my money, I had no recourse if items were damaged.

Overcharging & Poor Service

I later got two quotes from legitimate moving companies, showing that based on my actual inventory, I was overcharged by more than $2,000. I moved a 600sf 1bdrm apartment. Not a lot of boxes or furniture and was charged over $4500 altogether.

Final Verdict: DO NOT USE AB MOVERS

This company operates with bait-and-switch pricing, false promises, last-minute extortion, hidden fees, and unethical payment demands. They knowingly misled me about timelines, costs, and packaging requirements, then trapped me into paying more under duress.

Excellent service

The service was perfect from start to finish. I spoke with Matt and he did a virtual walk through of my house. He was a pleasure to work with. We went from room to room and his attention to detail and professionalism was top tier. We moved our 3 bedroom home from North Carolina to California. We shopped around for pricing and AB Moving Services wasn’t the cheapest but they also weren’t the most expensive. The service was worth every penny we spent. I highly recommend using them to anyone moving long distance. Thanks again Matt!

This moving company is a joke. I was quoted one amount then the morning of the move they change the price by $3,000. Then the day the movers were supposed to come they didn't show up until the next day and then when they did show up there were five and a half hours late I missed two flights because of them being late and didn't receive any discount other than $100.00 off. Took 2 weeks for my stuff to finally get to where it needed to be, but things were shattered broken missing. I will literally be doing my own moving next time because of this company. And it's not like they pick your stuff and then move it to your house or wherever it gets picked up then taken to a warehouse unloaded then somebody put your stuff on another truck with other people stuff and then it gets moved
