Elder Abuse Alert: Customers Beware of Big Shoulders Moving & Storage

Our experience with Big Shoulders Moving & Storage was deeply disappointing. My elderly parents hired them for an interstate move, initially quoted at $2,729.63 by a representative over the phone, who assured us someone would confirm the quote before moving day—this never happened.

On moving day, the drivers arrived and informed my parents that the original quote covered only medium boxes. Who moves using only medium boxes? This discrepancy required a new quote, inflating the total to $6,750—nearly triple the original estimate. Had we known the true cost upfront, we would have chosen another company. Now it’s clear why they avoided the promised in-person assessment until moving day—so we’d have no choice but to accept the increased charges.

We later discovered their claim of using only in-house drivers was false. On delivery day two new drivers arrived at my parents new location a week late, and the driver, demanded an additional $1,050 in cash, claiming the truck couldn’t access the complex and required a small shuttle. They had initially picked up the furniture in a small truck and transferred it to a large Semi truck, now their demanding more money to transfer it back. In addition, extra fees for elevator and stair use were added—none of which were disclosed upfront. Days later, we saw a large Semi Mayflower truck delivering furniture to the same building without any issues. Clearly, Big Shoulders’ claims were false.

Upon delivery, my parents’ 65-inch television ($799) and five irreplaceable china pieces ($248) were damaged. The claim resolution was: $23.28 for the television and $1.20 for the china. Completely UNACCEPTABLE!

Due to the unexpected charges, delays, and damage to valuable items, we strongly urge others to avoid this company. Big Shoulders Moving & Storage handling of the move was unprofessional and exploitative, particularly towards elderly clients.

The price when they showed up to move me was almost double what was quoted. They also did not disclose in advance that any damage would be not be covered in full but only based upon the weight of the item. I had over $5,000 in damages and they will only reimburse me $115. Additionally they were late with delivery and I had to incur additional cost of hotel room because they didn’t show up when scheduled. Finally, the delivery team dropped multiple boxes in front of me and did not clean up the package material.

I got my move from Chicago to Indiana they we're profesional I got a full packing they pack evergthing with blankets they we're really careful with my fragile iteams customer service Vanesa is really helpful and understanding I highly recomend Big shoulders

Danny and his crew were exceptional for our move from Sioux Falls to Minneapolis. They took careful order of all of our furniture and possessions. Would highly reccomend.
