DTM Van Lines

My wife and I signed a contract with American Van Lines (AVL) to move us cross-country. One morning, my wife received a call from a mover for DTM Van Lines, saying that they would soon be on their way to our apartment to pick up our things. We had not been notified about who DTM was or when pickup would be. Our AVL contact emailed in response that it had been decided last night that the pickup and delivery would be handled by DTM and that DTM would collect our balance on the delivery day.

After pickup on August 29, DTM contacted me directly by phone to ask for $800 up front for expenses. This was not part of our contract or what we had been told by AVL. We directed them to AVL, and DTM said that they would not proceed with the delivery without the payment, suggesting a delivery date more than three weeks in the future. Later, AVL got back in touch with us and assured us that no payment was needed, and that DTM had contacted the wrong customer by mistake.

Over the following weeks, we continued to follow up regularly by phone with AVL, but the estimated delivery date was repeatedly pushed back. Eventually, AVL gave me DTM's contact information. After repeated contact, after 2.5 weeks, we still had not received any concrete guarantee about a delivery, and the date continued to be pushed back. On Sept. 16, I expressed concern to DTM that we were being retaliated against for not making the $800 payment up front, and mentioned that I would have to take further measures against them. The moving coordinator at DTM became angry, yelling that I was 'coming at him sideways,' that he wouldn't take 'this BS,' and that 'you or American Van Lines can come and get your shit.' We received no further contact from DTM after this communication.

On Sept. 24, AVL told us that they would now pick up our things from DTM due to DTM repeatedly not giving them a reliable delivery date. After we retained a lawyer, our items were delivered by AVL themselves over six weeks after the pickup date.
