I originally received a quote from Mark at Family Moving after inquiring for moving quotes online (was looking at 2 Men and a Truck, originally). He quoted me $225+ $15 to wrap up the bed for a short move of 2 lightweight dressers, bed, computer desk & small office chair from my old apartment into a nearby storage unit, which seemed like a fair deal to save my temperamental lower back . The movers (Chance and Jerome) were on time, and they were polite. Everything went smoothly, but when we got to the storage unit, I realized that the corner of one of my dressers had been broken off, and when we were going over the final bill, they said it would be $333, which is $93 more than what I had budgeted (because they didn't tell me that each dresser and desk they wrapped, they charged extra $$ for). Needless to say I didn't tip them much because of the sneaky upcharges. Despite their politeness and efficiency, I CANNOT RECOMMEND THEM because of the sneaky price hike and the easily avoidable damage.
I do not typically write negative reviews, but STAY AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE. I had high hopes after my mother suggested this company. My online request for a quote went completely unanswered until I called them. Mark seemed like a decent guy at first, and everything seemed just dandy. Everything progressed quickly. The contract was sent via e-mail, it was a reasonable amount of money for the distance, and was signed electronically. The move was set for Saturday between "8 and 10 am, probably closer to 10", as Mark stated over the phone. We had a bit of snow, and everyone has to dig out the following day. It is Chicago; we understand that. My wife and I wanted to get an early start, so we left home at 6:30 in case they arrived early-- again the window was 8-10. We arrived at 8, and got a phone call from Family Movers at 9. The move was now delayed, and our new window was now 11-12. Vivian told us that they were shoveling out of their "enormous parking lot" (satellite photo included of the business and the small lot with their trucks, Google is kind enough to include a ruler for scale). I missed 2 calls at 11:03. I tried to return their call at 11:06. In fact, I tried calling them back 5 times over the next hour, and left several voice mails. I received a call from the guys in the moving truck at 12:11. The foreman I spoke with was extremely abrupt when I expressed disbelief that they had JUST departed the business, and we would have to wait another hour to an hour and a half. I asked if there was any compensation for the fact that we had already been waiting a significant amount of time. His response was an extremely rude "too bad we had to dig out". We all did, sir. We all did. Excuses and a bad attitude: this is not someone I want to be in charge of moving my stuff. I texted Mark (screenshot of the text thread included). His texts are clearly insincere: "My apologies for the delay?" and "this is the first I was aware". Yes, your dispatcher tried to call me twice, but she didn't leave a voicemail, and the ball is in your court when I try calling you back several times within the delivery window, amended or not. Mark is only concerned with himself and doesn't care about whose time he wastes, as long as it isn't his own and he gets paid. When called out for wasting our time on a Saturday, his response is "I didn't waste anything", showing a complete disregard for the 80 mile round trip and the 5 hours of waiting time at the pick-up location we had lost from our weekend. Sir, your sense of self-confidence is truly astonishing. Your half-hearted attempt to claim that you were "working to make it right" is truly laughable, and your disregard for others: unparalleled. If you were, in fact, "working to make it right", THAT would have been your first response. As opposed to the route you immediately chose. You stated that you had no interest in "going back and forth like children", how about you put your big-boy pants on and run a decent business and take some responsibility, that's what adults do. Family Moving is like the 10th martini of the evening: seemed like a great idea at the time, and now my wife is trying to get me to stop.
Please share!!!!!! I used Family Moving and storage for my move! BIG MISTAKE!! On day of first move there was an overtime charge of 115 that was not in my quote and a package of furniture charge of 115 that was not in quote. What could we do but pay it because we had to be out in less than 24 hours! Next day they show up 2 1/2 hours after their window of time! I get charged for a 2 hour drive which during rush hour should only take hour fifteen. Ok!!! There is not one thing they moved that they did not break! Or damage! Gouged my daughters headboard. My sons bunk bed. Two end tables huge gouges in them. My daughters bike seat ripped. They bent my meatal clock. Boxes that were brand new were smashed. They also broke my husbands grill grates and STOLE our dolly!! They had our stuff for one night and they unpacked and repacked our stuff out of the truck for one night. We knew immediately when they arrived at our new house because every thing was just thrown into the truck haphazardly. Called numerous time and spoke to the claims supervisor who is unwilling to assist .. Just says I have to email. Spoke to him again today about the dolly. I told him to add it to my file he said I had to email claims dept! I said I thought you were the claims dept. He said he was the supervisor of the claims dept... I DON'T GET IT !!!! If you run the division why cant you put it in my file! He asked me what else he could do for me I said yes resolve my issue today!! I said only thing I asked for were the two charges I was not told about to be refunded happy camper. Nope asked me again what else he could do I said yes resolve my ISSUE!!! He said have a nice day and HUNG UP on me!!! So please share again so no one ever uses this shaddy company.. Oh and two other people I spoke to there never heard of the Sunday OT charge!! Again its Family Moving and Storage INc.!!! share share share! Wish I could leave a no star! Not even an apology from any of them!
