Really the worst moving company I could choose. First of all they made the estimate based on photographs for the Covid-19 and gave me a price. On the day of the move they tell me that the price is not that and they literally charged me double the price that they had estimated at the beginning. They spent more than 14 hours collecting. They broke several pieces of the move and it's been two months and no one has answered my claim. It is very sad that they treat the customer that way.
Be forewarned if you are tempted to use J&R Moving out of Elberton, GA. I chose J&R Moving Service out of Elberton, Georgia because of the high rating on HomeAdvisors. It was the worst choice possible. Beginning with a guy named Ben Johnson, Sales Manager, he refused to send anyone to our home to give us a quote and insisted on using our online listing to approximate cubic feet. We paid for a full pack but chose to pack books and assorted items, approximately 100 boxes. There was no adjustment to that charge. Reginald Fortson and his sons arrived at noon both days. When I asked him why they came so late, Fortson told me he needed his sleep.
The J&R site claims not to use contract workers. Not true, the delivery driver was from a different company. Fortson brought the driver in to help pack. The driver communicated his displeasure to us as he didn't feel it was his job to pack. Fortson asked if I had paid for a full pack, which indicates there wasn’t any communication between Johnson and Fortson). At the end of packing, the J&R packer, Fortson, claimed we used more cubic feet than estimated (no surprise to us) and said the price had increased $900. He wanted 70% of the balance, instead of the 50% Ben Johnson stated would be required. I found it strange Fortson asked for the check be made out to him rather than J&R.
Enroute to Indiana from Georgia, I received a phone call from the delivery driver’s dispatcher claiming that Fortson had made yet another mistake in cubic feet, and the price had increased again. In the end, this move was $2050 over the original estimate. If you do not pay, you do not get your furniture.
The delivery driver arrived at 6P the next day and had no helpers, as promised. He came back the next day, again with no helpers. I and my husband, both in our late 70's, worked with him from 9:30a until 7:30p, carrying boxes, taking off blankets, tape. As we unpacked, the ineptness and total lack of regard for our belongings was revealed. Broken glassware, tape used on fine furniture without protection, missing bolts and screws to put furniture together, and clothes that were supposed to be packed in wardrobe boxes were thrown in with hangers at the bottom of the boxes. Worst of all was a broken screen on our one-year old 65” Sony Smart television. To add insult to injury, the packers missed a coat closet with all our winter gear including all the bedding and blankets from the guest bedroom. It took six weeks for them to have those contents delivered. Upon receipt of these last three boxes, we found that a family heirloom (Civil War sword), a radio, and several pair of expensive Merrell, Teva, and Born sandals were not among our possessions.
J&R did not return phone calls during this fiasco, but they did send us an initial check for $500 with the caveat that I remove this basic review on HomeAdvisor. I have followed that request, but I feel compelled to warn other potential customers about this company. It has been one of the worst experiences of our lives. I would call the Better Business Bureau in Elberton, GA, but I have discovered they are not a member, which is not surprising to me.
Estimate well below actual charge . Explanation, furniture was big! Arrived late. Demanded cash even though written terms clearly said credit card accepted. I believe work was actually subcontracted to INSYNC movers out of Florida! Would never use again.
Reginald was the only person I called regarding our move, but I felt comfortable with him. On the day of the move he was prompt, courteous, organized and was able to manage to get all our possessions into the storage unit space that we had available. He worked hard in 95 degree weather. I would easily recommend him to others.
