Full disclosure: I was an employee of McAvey Moving full/part time and during summer holidays from 1987 to 1997.
Our family has used only one other moving company in our 41 year timeline, and that was our overseas move in 2020 during the height of the Covid nightmare. Even then, I tried to get McAvey to take the job but Brian steered me to use another service that specializes in overseas transport. He was giving us his professional opinion, and I know he had our best interests at heart. That is a theme of the McAvey Moving Company, the client’s best interest is at the center of every job.
It's common knowledge that moving is one of the most stressful events in one’s lifetime. Even though I've worked as a mover and I know the process pretty well, I was apprehensive about every one of our family's moves, and since 2020, the count is four. I called McAvey each time because I knew we would get quality, dependable, service, a reasonable price, and most importantly, peace of mind.
Here’s a quick run down:
2020: We sold our home in the Bronx, shipped most contents overseas to our second home, and McAvey was hired to take the contents of two bedrooms, diningroom and kitchen to a rental house in Larchmont. This was November 2020 - no vaccines yet. Proper Covid protocol was followed, and the crew of four men were thorough and careful. The house in Larchmont was up a cliff basically, and had a three flight carry. Nobody balked. Not a bad word was spoken and the guys were in excellent humor. That was a burden relieved. The price was excellent and competitive. The men were great workers and funny as hell.
2022: In July we vacated Larchmont to an apartment in Harrison. Once again, a crew of four showed up to wrap and load our furniture. One of the bedrooms was being shipped upstate to my sister’s house and the men were careful to separate the two shipments. Again, the crew was professional and courteous. It was a hot July day, and despite the mountain-goat-carry to the truck compounded with the heat, there was no balking, just straightforward hard work. The new apartment complex board was very uptight about the possibility of any damage. They needed proof of insurance etc. Not a problem. Toni delivered same day service. She runs a tight ship, and adds to the feeling that the customer is in good, capable, hands. Toni exudes a calm confidence that puts a nervous person like me at ease. Of course, there was no damage and we got our move-in deposit returned. Another stressor relieved by McAvey Moving.
2024: Our most recent move was to leave New York altogether and land in Florida. Once again, McAvey was hired. The crew arrived at 10:00 am July 18th and had my goods loaded by 11:30am. The three man crew was really careful with my stuff. Even the pictures which have almost zero value were a point of discussion. I told Bill, the driver, to just throw a pad around them, they’re not important. He wasn't comfortable with that plan. When they arrived in Florida, on Brian's orders, each picture was wrapped in mirror wrap. Unbelievable. Speaking of the arrival in Florida, I moved out on the 18th and my stuff arrived on Tuesday the 23rd - a day ahead of schedule - and a full two weeks before I even expected the delivery to show. Eugene McAvey, President, arrived with my stuff from NY and delivered it in person! We haven't laid eyes on each other in 25 years, but my mover-muscle-memory returned, and two grizzled 60+ year-old former colleagues had the truck unloaded in an hour. The poor people in the complex were all stares at this unusual spectacle. Ah, the good old days. After driving all day, Eugene had the stamina to head off into the sunset. He wanted to get to his sister’s place the next day. We parted with a firm handshake and a few laughs.
Yes, this is a biased review. Take it or leave it. We use McAvey Moving because the service is high quality and fairly priced. They are intelligent, thorough, and more importantly, every member of the team has the client's best interests at heart. That’s the truth.
