Horrible Experience – Deceptive Practices & Hidden Fees

I strongly advise against using Reliable Movers. I was originally quoted $9,980 and was explicitly told there would be no hidden costs—this was their justification for being more expensive than other movers. That turned out to be a complete lie.

Scheduling Disaster & Bait-and-Switch Contract

They were scheduled to arrive on the 27th per my original contract but kept pushing the time back all day until they finally rescheduled for the 28th. Before they would move anything, they forced me to sign a new contract reflecting the 28th.

Deceptive Storage Unit Scandal

Over the phone, I clearly stated that I had a 10×10 storage unit in addition to my apartment that needed to be moved. I also sent pictures of all large items per their request, including the dimensions of my couch which was 13'×10. However, when issues arose, the owners claimed I never told them about the storage unit—even though every call was supposedly recorded.

What makes this worse is that when the movers arrived on-site, the first thing they asked for was the storage unit—meaning they knew about it all along. I firmly believe the owners deliberately left the storage unit out of the contract, but they quietly increased the estimated time from 28 hours to 32 hours to account for it. Then, they used this as a bait-and-switch tactic to inflate the costs while pretending the storage unit was never discussed.

Incompetent Movers & Damaged Property

They showed up with a 16’ truck, which I immediately told them wouldn’t fit everything for a cross-country move. They assured me it would—but of course, it didn’t. The movers were clearly inexperienced, moving incredibly slowly, and in the process, they:

Broke my $5,000 couch by trying to force it through the door without removing the legs.

Damaged the front door of my apartment before my final inspection.

Unloaded my belongings into the apartment complex parking lot while waiting up stairs in the new 20' truck, with no oversight, creating the risk of loss or theft.

Delays, Deceit & Hidden Fees

The delays nearly made me miss my flight to Iowa to meet them for the unload.

When I addressed the damage, the owner offered me a ridiculous $30 for my couch and $20 for the door, claiming that was a “reasonable estimate.”

They told me I should have chosen a higher insurance option—but they never gave me that option or even mentioned it.

When I got to Iowa, they pushed back the delivery time from noon to 8:30 PM.

Once they arrived, I helped unload the truck to minimize additional charges the other reviews warned me about, despite their promises of no hidden fees.

Fraudulent Charges & Shady Business Practices

After everything, they charged my card an extra $5,000 without my approval. No documentation, no sign-off on hours—just an unauthorized charge.

After my wife checked Yelp and BBB reviews, we saw this is their common scam—they change hours, drag out moves, and double the price once your furniture is on the truck.

Final Verdict:

Additional $5,000 charge with no approval

Delays that cost me a missed day of work

Broken furniture & property damage

Had to help unload to avoid even more charges

Owners falsely claimed I never mentioned my 10×10 storage unit, but the movers asked for it immediately upon arrival

Contract was manipulated from 28 hours to 32 to secretly include the storage unit, then used as a bait-and-switch to upcharge me

Dishonest pricing & fraudulent business practices

Do yourself a favor and stay far away from Reliable Movers.
