Horrendous Experience with U-Haul Reservation

I recently had to move household goods from Virginia to my home in Florida. To make the process smoother, I reserved a 10’ truck with U-Haul a week in advance. Unfortunately, my experience with U-Haul was anything but smooth.

Despite making a reservation, I received no communication from U-Haul after booking. Upon arriving at the U-Haul station in Virginia, I was shocked to find out that they did not have the truck I reserved! This was incredibly frustrating and inconvenient, especially after driving 13 hours from Florida.

The U-Haul staff suggested I drive over two hours away to pick up another truck, which was completely unreasonable after my long drive. They had no answers as to why the reserved truck wasn’t available. As a consolation, they offered to have a new truck available the next day and said they’d take off $200 from the total cost. Adding to the frustration, I found the same truck at a different location that was closer and $500 cheaper, but apparently, it wasn’t part of their district. U-Haul refused to price match or make any adjustments, essentially telling me “it is what it is.”

They said there would be a truck available the next morning and I asked them to call me when it arrived. This was a nightmare because I was on a tight schedule.

Out of desperation and having no faith left in U-Haul, I called Penske. This was my first experience with Penske, and they took care of everything. They located a truck locally and guaranteed it was actually there. The truck from Penske came with unlimited miles, was bigger, allowed for six days of use (instead of four days with U-Haul), and was $800 cheaper than U-Haul. The customer service was excellent, far surpassing U-Haul's. U-Haul called me back late afternoon, after the Penske truck was already loaded. I’m so glad I didn’t wait for U-Haul.

U-Haul doesn’t guarantee trucks will be there at pickup whereas Penske does. In my experience, Penske blew U-Haul out of the water with both their service and their pricing.

This entire ordeal with U-Haul put me in a bad position and caused unnecessary stress during an already stressful move. I expected better service and communication from U-Haul. This experience has left me extremely disappointed and I will think twice before using their services again. Call Penske before coming here!

This U-Haul Moving and Storage is one of the best moving and storage companies around the area. We got a U-Haul truck from there today and it was a very reasonable price. The truck was only $19.99 to rent for 24 hours. The mileage was only $0.99 a mile. That is a very good deal for these moving trucks. They offer a wide variety of sizes. The personnel was very friendly and very helpful. He went out of his way to help us. We will continue to use this U-Haul moving and storage company from now on. I highly recommend them.

The manager at this location has things on point. Of ALL the UHaul rental places I've used in VA, this is the absolute best one.

DO NOT USE THE ONLINE SYSTEM TO RESERVE A HITCH INSTALL!!!!
