I used Uhaul's Ubox containers to move my stuff 2300 miles, from Florida to Utah. Previously, I did the same distance with UPack in the opposite direction, and I like the Ubox better. Both companies got my stuff safely to the destination on time, so my rating is mostly about the details of the experience.
1. Cost. For the amount of stuff I had, I need 2 Uboxes, which is cheaper than 2 Upack containers by over $1000 dollars, though the Upack containers are larger. I had plenty of space for a 1bedroom. The Ubox is the cheapest option, though the boxes are just wood, whereas Upack is metal, and Pods looks even nicer. Being smaller, however, the Uboxes doesn't need to be as strong to provide the same protection, and I approve of their design.
2. The website is very good, designed to be perfectly transparent to help you know what all the costs are and what the total is, with a few drawbacks. I really like the option where you can upload photos so that they can drop off and pickup without you being there, and they did both nicely. They can improve by adding a button like Upack where the customer confirms that the boxes are ready to ship. Instead, they called numerous times both before and after. Kimbo, especially, is very professional and helpful.
3. Ubox containers look very nice inside and out, with an excellent door system that closes easily and securely, better than Upack, where the doors were hard for me, being stiff, complicated and weird. The drawback is that the Ubox door is large and does not have a latch, so that it swings into the neighbor car when windy if you don't put something against it. It happened to me, but luckily, the car was worn and you can't tell the difference. Remember you need to buy locks. Upack was full of spots all over the walls when you can tie stuff, but Ubox only has a few latches around the edges, about 4 or 6 per wall. Even then, with zip ties, I was able to tie up everything I needed tied.
4. Ubox comes with 24 shipping blankets each (Upack doesn't), which is a huge pile of heavy blankets that I didn't think I needed, but turned out to be very nice. They come in heavy vacuum packed bags, so I used them to keep the doors from swinging. I ended up using 15 total for my stuff. I folded them afterwards as instructed.
5. Ubox website provides no tracking information, unlike Upack. Ubox did text me when it shipped and when it arrived before the estimated time, but I believe they should provide tracking too, it will make the customers feel better.
Remember: you must buy locks for Ubox or Upack.
I am overall very pleased with the Ubox and will use it for all my future moving needs.
