Review:

After finally getting our broken down vehicle in running condition, we were eager to get back on the road again and home the following day. We needed a trailer to haul some items back with, so I went online and reserved one. On the reservation, I noted where we were and that we were immediately leaving, taking X route to get there as they were closing soon. En route, I called to let them know we were on our way, but being unfamiliar with the area ended up in road construction and were just a couple minutes behind schedule. Literally pulled up less than a minute after their closing time with 3 people still inside the building. Having called and noted on the reservation what was happening, I kept waving them to the door when they kept miming they were closed. When one of the girls (2 girls, 1 guy was present) finally opened the door, she did so with much eye rolling and attitude. I explained our situation and apologized for the (45 seconds or so) tardy arrival. Again, with eye rolling, she yelled what was clearly already heard over her shoulder to the other two. They looked it up, found my reservation, and then refused to take cash app without an additional fee when I blurted out the first card I came up with that had the rental amount on it.

When I asked what type of card they would take for the agreed upon price, they made a big deal out of saying it had to be a bank card. Okay, well, all my cards are associated with a bank....so debit? Prepaid? Credit? .....finally, I got a straight answer and let them know I just had to transfer the funds. That it'd take maybe a minute, but I needed to step away from the door (3 steps to the RV literally) in order to do so as when we pulled in, my phone was at 1%. Much eye rolling and sighing ensued as I did so. The second I turned my back, the first girl locked the door, and all 3 walked out the back, leaving the lights on and me standing there like an idiot watching them exit.

It cost us another day and a half of a pet sitter / house sitter, another several hours on the phone with uhaul to get a reservation in a different town that we ended up missing due to unforeseen circumstances with one driver heading the wrong way and needing assistance, a missed day of work for each of 3 people, and 2 motorcycles still left in Kansas because we didn't get a trailer in time to haul them back....so I won't even count the storage fees that are adding up daily.

I can't remember the last time someone in customer service straight up lied to my face about their intentions, walked out midtransaction, or had such a rude demeanor. It was insulting and infuriating.

The entire rental would've taken all of maybe 5 minutes to complete (assuming their paperwork is like every other uhaul place I've rented from, since most is already filled out and it's just a few initials verifying information, then swiping of a card and a signature). If the 3 working had acted anything near professional, we would've been happy with a glowing review here and everyone in our group would have left Kansas at the same time in the same direction.

They would've spent less time helping us then the time they took to show how inconvenienced they were by our less then 45 second late arrival, which again, they were informed of by online means and via the phone, so it wasn't like we were not expected.

I don't know the last time any business has treated myself (the people I were with couldn't come up with a worst experience either) so badly....or even close to as badly.

If given the chance, I'd recommend renting from anywhere else period. There's an app that let's you rent from locals when in need of a trailer and there's other brands if you can't find a uhaul unrelated to this store ownership/manager.

Edit: You can clearly see from the pictures that the issue was not that they were short in inventory. Yes we were 45 seconds or less late, but it's the first time being that close to closing that someone inside hasn't helped or assisted in locating a similar service in my lifetime.

Review:

I can't speak highly enough about Garrett and his staff at the Topeka Uhaul location. I really do think he saved our lives.

After having our improperly loaded and installed trailer spin us onto the opposite side of the highway into oncoming rush hour traffic, we took our trailer to Garrett's location to have it evaluated for our safety (miraculously no one was hit or hurt). Not only did he inform us that whoever installed our trailer did it incorrectly (with too low of a bar), but he also said that even without it being loaded improperly, we were lucky to make it out with our lives since my car is only approved to tow the weight of the EMPTY trailer we were given. After giving us all the pertinent information (without upselling or pushing in anyway), we stayed the night in Topeka to reassess, and ended up unloading the trailer into a storage unit (free for a month) at his location until a winter storm passed so we could come back and load it into a box truck to move to our destination. In the midst of all of this, he gave us lists of reliable movers to help unload the trailer, and even sent us to a fantastic mechanic in town to evaluate the damage to my car. And at the end of it all, he took the entire cost of renting the trailer off of our bill to help make up for our trouble, and also said he would personally reach out to the location that installed it incorrectly (KC - Lenexa).

Garret and his entire team were incredibly professional, educated, efficient, informative and incredibly helpful without any upselling or pressuring. There wasn't anyone there that wasn't going above and beyond. I honestly can't recommend this location and its team highly enough.
