U-Haul of Madison Heights

Just what I needed, right when I needed it!

I would give 0 stars if I could.

I should have known it was going to be bad when the salesman told me that their store was the 'black sheep of the whole entire U-Haul organization'. This comment was in response to my asking if the U-Haul app frequently goes down because I was unable to do the mobile check in as I had requested. As we talked about insurance, he mentioned that I didn't need additional coverage because 'shy of bringing the truck back without a roof' nothing would matter with these trucks.

The truck that we were given was horrible. The check engine light kept coming on every few miles even though it appeared to have oil. The driver door did not shut tightly and would often come open on turns. Once we had the movers completely load the truck, the back door would not come down. Had to call Roadside assistance even though the rental location was less than a mile away. Roadside assistance sent a text stating it would be 15-30 minutes but then called and said it would be closer to 90 minutes. We had already turned in the keys to my daughters apartment so we sat outside in the 86 degree weather and waited. Finally, we decided to see if we could get it down because my 9 year old was tired and hot. It took three grown adults to push and pull until we finally got the back gate down. No key for the padlock that was supplied so we took turns watching the truck any time we needed to stop during the 80 mile drive back home. The truck did not accelerate as it should so we were not able to go much over 55 the whole way back. Lots of knocking and banging as we drove.

When we returned the truck to the drop off location, the salesman even made a comment that he was surprised that they rented that truck to us. He said 'usually the trucks in this kind of shape are only used for in town moves'. We didn't even say anything about it prior to that...he just seemed very shocked. He kept apologizing even though he was not responsible in any way.

We have rented quite a few trucks in the last couple of years and have had good experiences each time. This past experience will make me rethink where we rent from in the future...especially if we have to deal with the Madison Heights location.

I never write reviews but today went today to pick up a trailer and had a great experience. We were nervous at first about not being able to hook it up to our car but the two guys there today were awesome and totally worked through it quickly and were able to help us out.
